About Us

We give thanks to our yoga teacher who has shown us yoga in all that he does. We are eternally grateful for the transformation he has enabled in our lives. Taking us from a lack of understanding about ourselves and guiding us towards unified understanding.

It has been through him that the essential principle of yoga has been fulfilled, allowing the student to gain what the teacher has to offer.

Hughie

With the timing ripe, I met my teacher Robert Byrne in 2002. Practicing yoga came naturally to me, I loved it! It wasn’t long before I prioritised going to Rob’s classes and begin what would become fifteen years of transformation. By 2004 I had established a reliable, regular practice at class and home and it was at this point that I was given the opportunity to teach which added a valuable dimension to my study of yoga.

During these first few years, a good foundation was laid towards making my mind still and stable by getting up early before class and sitting for an hours meditation and then again in the evening. This was further applied by developing the ability to lengthen and balance my breath during challenging times throughout the day. I dedicated the necessary time to open my longways and sideways splits which created a good foundation for energy to lift throughout my body. During this same period, much transformation occurred in regard to non-attachment to the results of actions and in the ability to stay in the present moment.

Over the years, many yoga chants have been learnt and absorbed. Through this process I have developed accessible and practical starting points for sharing them with others, none more powerful and beneficial than the 182 Sanskrit verses of the Shree Guru Gita.

At the start of 2015 Elisha and I visited Ganeshpuri, India, the place where our yoga lineage began, originating from Bhagwan Nityananda (1961). This allowed us to experience the amazing good still being carried out today stemming from Nityananda. Later the same year, I was given the opportunity to teach four diverse classes each week which included discussion on the understanding of yoga, chanting, postures with abbreviations for everyone and a realistic foundation for meditation. I also started a weekly one-on-one yoga private, which further broadened my application of yoga.

In 2017, after fifteen years of earnest study and firsthand contact with our teacher who is firmly established in the unified state of yoga, the timing was right for us to take the next step in our process. This involved establishing Yoga of Self and soon after, a yoga studio in Currumbin Valley. From this point, everything has slowly expanded from the daily classes and program being taught and kept track of. In 2020 we started working with the Veterans Care Association on their Timor Awakening retreats, which has seen many groups of war veterans come over the years to practice yoga and learn to apply its benefits to daily life.

Like a pot plant moving from the pot into the earth, in 2024 Elisha and I moved to Mullumbimby and established True Nature Yoga in a larger studio space and a more accessible location. It’s very pleasing to now be offering such a diverse and well-rounded presentation of all the main aspects of yoga. We’ve been given a body, we’ve been given a mind, we’ve been given a heart, we’ve been give the breath, we’ve been given the understanding so it just makes sense to practice asana, meditation, chanting, vital breathing and satsang in each class.

Elisha

I met Robert whilst studying at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in 2005. His teachings changed the course of my life and fulfilled a truth I had been seeking to understand.

Having searched for many years for a greater purpose whilst travelling internationally, reading books and completing courses, when I met Rob, I was ready to undertake a realistic yoga process. This involved attending classes daily and helping out in any way needed for the next twelve years.

Some of my karma yoga responsibilities involved brochure and website development, administration and supporting retreats.

I met Robert whilst studying at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in 2005. His teachings changed the course of my life and fulfilled a truth I had been seeking to understand.

Having searched for many years for a greater purpose whilst travelling to many countries, reading books and completing courses, when I met Rob, I was ready to undertake a realistic yoga process. This involved attending daily classes and helping out in any way needed for the next twelve years. Some of my karma yoga responsibilities involved brochure and website development, administration and supporting retreats.

I began teaching in 2007 and share yoga in a relatable and caring way. My classes are founded on Robert’s understanding and the Yogareal lineage. They encourage you to let go of tension and limited conditioning and experience deep acceptance, love and lightness within yourself. My expression of yoga is flowing, vital and restorative. Accessible to anyone earnestly wanting to understand one’s consciousness and energy.

Having sincerely enquired and applied myself to many yoga techniques, I believe in a holistic approach to healing. This includes physical posture and alignment, chanting, meditation, self-enquiry and space to intuit what is the next step in one’s unfoldment. I have studied Vipassana and Satyananda’s Yoga Nidra techniques. I have taught pregnancy classes and assisted women to incorporate yoga optimally throughout and beyond their pregnancy. I have a personal interest in Ayurveda, Biofield Tuning, gardening and love to cook nourishing meals at home.

In 2020, it was time to leave full-time corporate work and walk barefoot as we undertook the custodianship of Currumbin Valley Harvest, an organic farmers market and community hub. I advocate an integrated approach to work and spiritual discipline. My other professional expressions and endeavours include the creative arts, recruitment, professional training and development.

Having spent time travelling mother India, I have a deep love and respect for our lineage and feel privileged to be able to share the teachings and understanding at True Nature Yoga. In 2024, Hugh and I were privileged to take twenty of our students, teachers and friends to Ganeshpuri, the origin of our yoga, which allowed them to deepen their essential connection to our lineage.

I love leading a balanced and abundant life, shared in community with deep reverence for our blessings.
